Virtual Knit Groups are ON! ...and a KAL too!

Updated: Jul 5, 2020

Following our post from 4 days ago, where we announced our first Virtual Knit Group as a little trial to test the concept. We are happy to report that it was a great success, and that we are looking forward to many more!

We were delighted to see so many of you join us on the Zoom platform last Friday. It was relatively straightforward for everyone to log in and join, and once everyone was properly connected, we chatted and exchanged smoothly about our crafting projects, but also about the lock down and how we all cope with it. I think it is fair to say that this online chat was a welcome breather, bringing a bit of normality in an abnormal situation. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces, and new ones too!

Our next Virtual Knit Night is planned for tomorrow Wednesday 1st April at 7pm GMT+1 (if you’re joining from outside the UK, please note that we’re now on British Summer Time). Please, grab your knitting or crochet, a cup of tea or coffee, make yourself comfortable and join us! We look forward to seeing and chatting with all of you. After this, the following Virtual Knit Group will be held on Friday 3rd April at 10.30am GMT+1.

Crafting corner, ready for Virtual Knit Group

We also would like to make a little announcement... As the official 2020 Shetland Wool Week knitting pattern Katie’s Kep has just been released, we are excited to launch a Knit-Along (KAL) at Baa! This lovely stranded hat has been exclusively designed by Wool Week Patron Wilma Malcolmson and the pattern can be downloaded for free here. Would you like to join? The Virtual Knit Groups mentioned above would be the perfect opportunity to drool on our colour choices, and to share our progress.

Unsure about putting colours together? Look no further... At Baa! headquarters, Janice has been busy preparing kits, with expertly assorted colours from the wonderful range of Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift yarn (the perfect choice to knit a fair isle hat!). Baa! carries about one hundred of shades of Spindrift, making assorting colours a real treat. Aren't they pretty?

On the top shelf on the left are the colours that I have picked with the help of my daughter, to knit her a Katie's Kep (adjusted for a smaller head). Needles at the ready, I am about to cast on... And you, what colours will you pick?

ChiaoGoo Red Lace, our favourite circular needles

Finally, as you know, we had to temporarily close Baa! headquarters, and so we are currently migrating all stock of the shop online. We are doing our best to complete this in a timely manner. Just now, we have uploaded some new yarn, but also part of the knitting needles, and some of the books too (mostly crochet). Please come back often to check what's new!

Take care everyone, and we hope to see you on Wednesday (tomorrow!) and/or on Friday on Zoom for the Virtual Knit Groups!

In summary:

  • Prepare a cosy little corner in your kitchen / living-room / favourite place with your choice of drink (coffee for us, but pick whatever you fancy!), your current knitting/crochet project (we recommend a not-too-intricate piece so you can chat in a relaxed manner), and maybe indulge in a piece of cake?

  • Wednesday 1st April at 7pm GMT+1 (British Summer Time), and/or Friday 3rd April at 10.30am GMT+1, click on this link or join us directly on your Zoom app with Meeting ID: 2889595554.

  • Follow the directions on your screen.

  • Engage with all of us as we knit, crochet, craft along while blethering about this and that, and re-inventing the world!
