What is included:
Full instructions to crochet the Brodgar Scarf, designed by Fiona Meade.
A traditional rectangular scarf, the Brodgar Scarf works up ~30cm wide and ~2m long using the gauge in the pattern. It can be worn as a wrap or a scarf.
1 x Scheepjes Whirl
2-3 x Scheepjes Whirlette
You will need 1000 m of 4ply or fingering weight yarn. Use a yarn with a high proportion of cotton or a firm twist for clear stitch definition. Use a Scheepjes Whirl or Wooly Whirl for a gradient effect, or a Whirlette for a solid colour.
A solid or semi-solid colour sock yarn would also be suitable for a warmer fabric. You will lose the effect of the open-work motifs if you use a highly speckled yarn or yarn with a short stripe.
3 mm (C/2) crochet hook for the body of the scarf
(or size required to achieve gauge)
3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook for the foundation chain
You will also need scissors and a yarn needle.
About the pattern
Crochet openwork uses chain spaces to create an open lacy fabric, perfect for beautifully draping scarves. This scarf is compiled of a series of geometric openwork motifs, inspired by the “Brodgar Stone”, a ~5000 year old carved stone found on the Ness of Brodgar on Orkney (Scotland) in 1925.
This pattern is suitable for anyone who can confidently crochet UK treble crochets (US double crochet) with an even tension. Both written and charted instructions are included, as well as detailed photographs.
The pattern uses UK treble crochet, double crochet, chain, slip stitch, increases, decreases, and front and back post treble crochet (US double crochet, single crochet, chain, slip stitch, increases, decreases, and front and back post double crochet). Full instructions are given for non-standard stitches.
