Our favourite summer yarns from Scheepjes for knitting and crochet
Look, I’m a bit of a knitting addict (aren’t we all?!), so I still get that itch to cast on new summer craft projects even when the sun’s blazing and I’m melting into my second ice cream of the day (I really, reeeeally like ice cream, okay?!)
And I know I’m not on my own here – my fellow knitters and crocheters, I know you get it. The urge to start another crochet or knitting project is always there, even when the last thing you want is a woolly jumper or granny square blanket in your lap.
Luckily, summer crafting doesn’t have to mean putting your needles and hooks away. There are loads of brilliant lightweight summer yarns out there, perfect for keeping your creative addiction going even when the temperatures are soaring.
We’re massive fans of Scheepjes yarns at Baa! as you might have guessed from our range available in our Stonehaven knitting shop. When it comes to summer knitting and crochet, Scheepjes has a yarn for everyone whether your Ravelry queue is filled with floaty summer tees, crocheted bags or cute amigurimi toys for the kids.
Whether you’re knitting in hot weather or searching for the perfect non-wool yarns for summer projects, Scheepjes has a brilliant selection of cool cotton yarns for crochet and knitting that we love! I’ve gathered our top picks here at Baa! to help you find the right summer yarn for your next warm-weather make.
1. Scheepjes Catona: The classic cotton for summer crafting
Alright, let’s kick things off with a classic for all your summer knitting and crochet needs. If you’ve visited Baa! In Stonehaven before, you’ve probably seen our colourful collection of Scheepjes Catona. This little 4-ply wonder is a go-to yarn for summer craft projects, and is particularly popular with our crochet customers here at Baa!
Scheepjes Catona is a 100% mercerised cotton, which basically means it’s had a clever treatment to make it stronger, shinier, and better at soaking up all those glorious dyes. It leaves the yarn feeling soft and smooth with a lovely lustre, beautiful colour and stitch definition that is so crisp, you can see the texture a mile off.
We love it for small craft projects like amigurumi toys, bits and bobs for the home and summery accessories, but it’s just as lovely knitted up into a sweet baby cardigan or crocheted into breezy summer tops. Plus, with just shy of 100 colours on the Baa! shelves, and with a price tag of only £2.95 a ball, you’re spoilt for choice without breaking the bank.
Why we love Scheepjes Catona for summer crafting:
- It’s lightweight and breathable
- It has excellent stitch definition for showing off textures and patterns
- We’ve got loooads of colours including some jazzy neons that scream summer
- Perfect for both summer knitting and crochet
- It’s the top choice of the crochet crowd at Baa!

2. Scheepjes Organicon: The summery cotton for eco crafters
If you love your yarns vegan friendly and kind to the planet, Scheepjes organicon is the one for you. Made from 100% organic cotton, Scheepjes Organicon is a brilliant 4-ply yarn that ticks all the boxes.
It’s eco friendly, GOTS-certified, organic and completely natural. Exceptionally soft and smooth, it’s a yarn that is delicate enough for even the softest of baby skin. Perfect for knitted baby bits, sweet toys and accessories and the most breathable of summer tees.
Speaking of which, if you’re subscribed to our mailing list, you’ll have seen our lovely customer Debbie showing off her Strawberry Summer Top which she crocheted using Organicon in shades 219 Oxygen, 233 Restless Pine and 247 Swaying Tulip.
If you’re looking for the perfect yarn for your summer craft projects, we know you’ll love this one.
Why we love Scheepjes Organicon for summer crafting:
- It’s GOTS certified which means it’s super sustainable
- It’s super soft and lightweight
- Delicate enough for the most sensitive skins making it a fantastic yarn for baby knits, or fitted tops that are close to the skin
- We’ve got lots of lovely colours, from the brightest, jazziest pink to the softest, most gentle peachy tone – and everything in between.
- It’s an ideal choice whether you prefer knitting or crochet.
What to make with Scheepjes Organicon:

3. Scheepjes Whirlette: The top choice for summery shawls
If you’d prefer a yarn that isn’t completely made from cotton, you might prefer Scheepjes Whirlette instead. This one is a 60% cotton, 40% acrylic blend that produces a lovely soft fabric that’s soft next to the skin and light enough to wear on the sunniest days.
Whirlette is actually designed to accompany its bigger yarn brother, Whirlette. It’s the same cotton soft blend, but without the gradients. The idea is that you can use it alongside Whirl as a complementing block colour, but it works great as a standalone summer yarn for all kinds of summer craft projects. We love Whirlette for summer shawls, cardigans and tops where you want a little bit of drape. Plus, because you get so much on a ball (a 100g cake gives you 455m of 4-ply yarn) you could probably get away with purchasing just one for a lot of patterns, just like our lovely customer Elspeth who only used one for her green knitted summer top pictured above.
Why we love Scheepjes Organicon for summer crafting:
- It’s smooth, soft and has a subtle drape that flatters your summer knitting and crochet
- Mix of cotton and acrylic makes it suitable for vegan crafters
- Ideal for summer layering pieces like shawls and shrugs
- Solid colours make it a great staple if you love colour blocking
- Each 100g cake contains a whopping 455m, so you can do a lot with just one.
What to make with Scheepjes Organicon:
Here are a few summer projects for both knitters and crocheters:
- Knitted tops like Outline Tee by Jessie Maed Designs and Ranunculus by Midori Hirose
- Knitted and crocheted shawls like Melodia by Janina Kallio and Nightfall Shawl by Sylwia Kawczynska
- Summer cover ups like Virelia Cardigan by Natalia Kononova and Florence Tie Crop Cardigan by Sarah Hatton
4. Scheepjes Stone Washed: The super soft one for lightweight summery knits
Now, if you’re after something that feels as soft as a cloud but still has a great bit of structure and strength, Scheepjes Stone Washed is your gal. This one’s a real crowd pleaser, partly because it’s ridiculously soft, partly because of the looovely sort of mottled colour palette that makes your knitting and crochet look *chef’s kiss* even before you’ve finished weaving in the ends.
Stone Washed is a sport/DK weight yarn made from 78% cotton and 22% acrylic. The cotton core is wrapped in a fuzzy acrylic halo that gives it a sort of washed, heathered effect. In our opinion, it’s the best of both worlds. It’s lightweight enough for all your summer craft projects, yet cosy enough for transitional layers and soft enough to suit even the most yarn-sensitive folk.
We love it for summer projects with a bit of texture. We’re picturing airy cardigans, breezy sweaters, and anything with a bit of open stitch work – so excellent news for you crocheters.
Why we love Scheepjes Stone Washed for summer crafting:
- Slightly heavier than the other yarns for layering or chucking on in the evening when the temperatures are cooler
- That soft halo gives the most gorgeous texture without being itchy
- The colours are muted and dreamy, with that gentle faded look that I really appreciate
- The high cotton content means your summer craft project will hold up brilliantly for everyday wear, meaning you can wear them over and over and over again.
